- Elizabeth Bishop was a poet who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1956 for her collection of poems titled Poems: North and South: A Cold Spring. The collection (1947-1950) contains original and typed transcripts of letters from Bishop to Carley Dawson, a book of poetry by Bishop, and a poem by Carley Dawson.

Elizabeth Bishop was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Vassar College.
During 1949 to 1950, Bishop was a consultant in poetry at the Library of Congress. Bishop was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1956 for her collection of poems titled, Poems: North and South: A Cold Spring.

Correspondence (1947-1950) includes hand-written and typed letters to Carley Dawson from Elizabeth Bishop that refer to poets, poetry, and personal problems. Bishop also seemed to have written drafts of Dawson's writings, gives comments and advice in her letters. Also included in the correspondence is a hand-written poem by Dawson.
There are also transcribed letters from Bishop to Dawson, and from other people about Bishop, contained in a notebook. One of the letters refers to a time Bishop stayed at Dawson's house while Dawson was away.
The collection includes a book of poetry by Bishop that is inscribed to Dawson.
