The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition resides within the UW's Department of Medicine and focuses on research in the areas of lipids and lipoproteins, diabetes mellitus, nutrition and its related disorders, and reproductive endocrinology. The division supports a research fellowship training program, three local clinics (UWMC Diabetes Care Center, UWMC Lipid/Nutrition Clinic, and UWMC Endocrinology Clinic), and provides a leadership role in a number of local and regional centers, research projects, and facilities.

He headed the division and was Chair of the Medicine Department from 1948-1963. He continued as division head until 1975, when he was succeeded by Edwin Bierman.

Scope and Content: Correspondence and subject files; 1966-1979 (bulk 1970-1979).

Biographical/Historical Note: The Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center is organized around six core units: administration, clinical research, cytohistochemistry, R.I.A., physiology, and tissue culture with the goals of providing better access to standard laboratory analyses and facilities; assisting in the recruitment of study subjects; fostering and encouraging the development and efficient use of new technologies relevant to diabetes research; and coordinating, stimulating, and supporting collaborative studies between investigators interested in diabetes at the University of Washington. To broaden and enhance the scientific environment for diabetes research at the University of Washington, the Center's Enrichment Program provides a Seminar Series, Core Symposia, and Visiting Scientist Program.

Scope and Content: Chronological correspondence files (1981-1983, 1986); DERC grants, progress reports, and special reports (1974-1992); and grants and drug contracts funded by outside agencies (1978-1990).
