Content DescriptionReturn to Top

A composite collection made up of six separate auction lots containing 75 original photographic prints and one glass-plate negative. Folders 1 and 2 include 16 gelatin and silver print cabinet cards, on C. W. Hanson and J. A. Hanson studio mounts. Each photograph depicts members of the Nez Perce tribe in various studio settings. Folders 3 and 4 contain 45 gelatin and silver print cabinet cards, on E. G. Cummings studio mounts. These images, taken in the studio and outdoors, depict various Nez Perce Indians. An 8x10 glass-plate negative (folder 5), copyrighted by F.T. Cummins in 1903, of Chief Joseph shows him seated in with another man in Western dress. Two prints made from the negative may be found in folder 6. A bust-length portrait of Chief Joseph (folder 7) is printed on the verso with O. S. Goff and D. T. Bismarck. Eight bromide prints (folder 8) by Dr. Edward H. Latham were taken at Nespelem, WA ca. 1900-1905. The final two 7x9 mounted albumen prints (folder 9) were believed at purchase to be the St. Joseph Mission Nez Perce School, but were identified in 2011 as the St. Francis Xavier Mission and Indian School in St. Xavier, Montana (Crow Reservation).
