Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Kiichi Setsuda was a Japanese American businessman in Seattle in the early decades of the 20th century. He graduated from Kanzai Law College in Japan in 1892 at the age of 21 and moved to Seattle in 1902. He ran the import business K. Setsuda Company, as well as the Japanese American Fertilizing and Fisheries Company on Lummi Island. During the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle in 1909, Mr. Setsuda served as international juror and awarded a number of the exposition awards. During his life, Setsuda was the president of the Japanese Merchants' Association of Seattle, president of the Tokyo Club of Seattle, trustee of the Japanese Association of Washington, member of the New Seattle Chamber of Commerce and Seattle Commercial Club, and life member of the Seattle Art Association.

The collection contains images of Japanese American Fertilizing and Fisheries Company buildings and boats on Lummi Island in northern Puget Sound. The collection also has images of Japanese Americans in Seattle, including scenes inside the K. Setsuda Co. import store and various group photographs.

Processed by Sarah Nelson, 2004.
Photographs were transferred to the Special Collections Division, February 1971. The five images of the Lummi Island were retained and then transferred from the Kiichi Setsuda Papers (Accession No.1532-1) on April 17, 1981. The five images of the Seattle series are copies that were made of originals that were returned to the donor.
