This section, boxes 1 through 3, contains general correspondence of the executive directors (and their assistants) of the National Communication Association, arranged in its original chronological order. The correspondence refers to all aspects of the NCA from 1982 to 1983 and 1990 to 1991, including meeting information, membership information, publications, short courses, committee information, and policy matters. Correspondence of William Work, Executive Director of the NCA from 1963 to 1988, can be found in boxes 1 and 2 and includes correspondence from 1982 and 1983. Correspondence of James Gaudino, who became the Executive Director of the NCA in 1988, can be found in boxes 2 and 3 and includes correspondence from 1990 and 1991. Other correspondence in the collection was left with associated documents.

This section contains the financial records of the National Communication Association from 1971 to 1991 and is housed in boxes 4 through 8. Included are expense ledgers and reports, the association's deposit sheets and accompanying receipts from the New Dominion Bank in Northern Virginia, financial statements as prepared by an auditor (Harab, Kamerow and Associates, P.C. CPA), budget planning information, contracts and agreements, receipts, and invoices. The contracts and agreements discuss copyright, printing, publication, and service issues, while the receipts and invoices refer to general office business expenses, such as postage and copy charges. Many of the materials included in this section concern the NCA's relations with the federal government's Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) program with which the NCA had extensive participation. ERIC's mission included promoting and distributing new books and other publications and the ERIC Speech Communication Module produced and distributed over 45 monographs between 1973 and 1986. The financial records of this section reflect some of the production matters of this module.

This section, boxes 9 through 14, contains information regarding employees and volunteers of the National Communication Association. Time sheets recording time worked by employees from 1980 to 1987 can be found in boxes 9 and 10. Personnel files arranged alphabetically by the employee's or volunteer's last name are located in boxes 11 through 14. Included in these personnel files are resumes, vitae, photocopies of photographs of the individuals, job applications, and correspondence. Original photographs have been transferred to the Multimedia Section of the Manuscripts Division (P0746).

This section, boxes 15 through 96, contains materials regarding the many committees, divisions, sections, commissions, task forces, and caucuses within the National Communication Association. These groups each had a specific focus within the larger organization, dealing with administrative issues, awards, debate and education programs, finance, publications, and both short and long term projects. Materials in this section include correspondence, meeting minutes, and information regarding projects completed by the groups. Materials of the largest groups (boxes 15 through 87) have been placed at the beginning of the section, with smaller groups arranged at the end (boxes 89 through 97) in alphabetical order within their respective category (committee, task force, etc.). The large groups include Administrative Committee (boxes 15 to 18), States Advisory Council (box 19), Finance and Research Boards (box 20), Legislative Council (boxes 21 to 24), Educational Policies Board (boxes 25 to 32), Publications Board (boxes 33 and 34) and the Committee on International Discussion and Debate (boxes 35 to 88 and oversize storage). The materials of the Committee on International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) chronicle the history of international debate programs sponsored by the NCA from 1959 to 1993. The materials include correspondence, host institution information, itineraries, participant materials, tour evaluations and tour publicity. The participant materials included in the CIDD files contain photocopies of photographs. The original photographs were transferred to the Multimedia Section of the Manuscripts Division (P0746). Materials regarding the national "Bicentennial Youth Debates" (boxes 43 to 51) that were sponsored by the NSCA in 1976 include congressional endorsements for the program, correspondence, final project evaluations, (the official publication for the debates), project descriptions and outlines, and publicity. Oversized publicity posters for the international debate program are in box 88. These were photocopied where possible and the photocopies were placed in the original locations of the posters.

This section, boxes 98 through 107, contains information regarding the many annual conferences and conventions of the SCA as well as short courses sponsored by the SCA. The materials include correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, agenda background materials, reports, travel arrangement materials, and papers presented at the annual conventions held by the SCA. Materials of conferences from 1972 to 1991, listed alphabetically by conference name, are located in boxes 98 and 99. Materials regarding the annual conventions of the SCA held from 1967 through 1995 can be found in boxes 100 and 101. Papers presented for evaluation at the SCA 1980 convention are located in boxes 102 to 104, and are arranged in alphabetical order by title. Materials concerning the high school short courses offered by the SCA from 1987 to 1990 in conjunction with the annual conventions are located in boxes 105 through 107. Materials are arranged by date and include proposals, evaluations, final reports, operations manual for short courses, and participant information.

This section, boxes 108 through 112, offers information regarding projects and proposals of the SCA. Materials of the Police and Prison Communication Project done in 1972 by the SCA are located in box 108 and include articles, correspondence, grant applications, notes, project objectives, proposal applications, and working drafts of the project proposal. The Police and Prison Communication Project was conducted to "develop and disseminate nationally a training program in human communication for law enforcement officers." Information on "Inter-Com '75 and '76," a project done by the SCA with the Canadian Speech Association can be found in box 109. This project was done to "give educators from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States opportunities to exchange views and formulate recommendations in response to the question, 'What can teachers and researchers do to help insure that the young will acquire the communication competencies needed to function in a rapidly changing world?'" Materials include contacts with the CSA, project abstract, mailings, fund raising, papers, proposals, and studies. Materials from smaller projects of the SCA, including a minimal competencies project, a salary project, a theater project, and a basic communication curriculum proposal, are located in boxes 110 to 112. The materials are dated 1975 to 1993, and are arranged in alphabetical order. General project fund requests for 1991 are located in folders 1 through 3 of box 110.

This section, boxes 113 through 119, contains studies, surveys, and reports conducted by the SCA, as well as those completed for the SCA by ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills Speech Communication Module (see Section II). The materials include data reports, quarterly reports, site visit reports, accession log sheets and report resumes, and information on surveys including results and correspondence. Materials (1960-1991) of general studies, surveys, and reports are arranged alphabetically and can be found in boxes 113 and 114. Quarterly reports (1972-1976) of the ERIC Speech Communication Module that contain information on the management and activities of the module are located in box 115. Site visit reviews (1973-1975) of the ERIC Speech Communication Module are located in box 116. These reviews were done to track the progress of the module. Accession log sheets and report resumes (1972-1980) which document articles, papers, and publications added to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills can be found in boxes 117 to 119. The log sheets contain accession numbers assigned to the documents, the date the document was logged, the author's name(s), and other intake information. The report resumes contain more detail on the documents, including title and abstracts describing the contents of the documents.

This section, boxes 120 through 150, contains publications produced by the Speech Communication Association and materials containing information about these publications. Publications of the SCA (1967-1994) are located in boxes 120 through 141, and are arranged in alphabetical, then chronological, order. The publications include (boxes 120 to 123), (boxes 123 to 127), (boxes 127 to 129), (boxes 129 and 130), (boxes 130 to 132), (boxes 132 to 133), (box 133), (boxes 133 to 137), (box 137), (boxes 137 to 139), (boxes 139 and 140), (box 140), and (boxes 140 and 141). SCA directories and convention programs (1982-1994) can be found in boxes 141 to 144. Publication materials (1972-1993) are located in boxes 145 through 150 and include correspondence, contacts with sponsors of the publications, contacts with publishing companies, receipts and invoices, and materials regarding the production of the publications.

This section, boxes 151 through 156, contains materials relating to the teaching profession as collected and/or produced by the Speech Communication Association between 1962 and 1994). The materials include guidelines for teaching, information on conferences and courses for teachers, handbooks, correspondence, newsletters, information on conferences and meetings held by the SCA for teachers, and other aids for the professional teacher.

This section, boxes 157 through 159, contains information regarding awards sponsored by the SCA. The materials include correspondence regarding and descriptions of award policies, recipient lists, descriptions and histories of the awards, and correspondence regarding the awards. Information on the award policies of the SCA, including correspondence, drafts of the policies, and notes, can be located in folders 1-4 of box 157. The award information is in alphabetical order in boxes 156 to 158, with folders 1-3 of box 158 holding miscellaneous award information.

This section, boxes 160 through 163, contains materials that were originally ordered as "administrative alphabetical files." The original folder titles and order have been retained. The materials (1964-1994) include correspondence, information on matters regarding the SCA, including legal matters and the creation of a history for the association. Materials used in the compilation of a history of the SCA from 1964 to 1989, including booklets, correspondence, and papers, can be located in boxes 160 and 161. Other files include advertising, membership drive information (1982); past officer information, policy document and statement, national office staff meetings, and student matters including graduate students/teaching assistants, interns, and seminars.

This section, boxes 164 through 185, contains materials (1967-1993) regarding interaction between the Speech Communication Association and national and international professional organizations. The organizations are all connected with communication and/or education. They also include organizations that sponsored programs connected with communication and/or education. The materials are arranged in alphabetical order by organization name, and include advertising materials, correspondence, mailings, pamphlets, publications, and publicity. Oversize materials, such as newsletters and publicity posters, are in box 185. Photocopies of these items have been made and kept in their original locations. Materials of speech and communication associations that had contact with the SCA are located in boxes 164 and 165. The materials include announcements, by-laws and constitutions of the associations, conference and convention materials, correspondence, membership applications and information, newsletters, and other publications. Information on the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development from 1981-1992 can be found in boxes 169 to 172. The SCA had extensive contacts with this organization and the materials found in these boxes document that contact. The materials include convention and meeting materials, correspondence, drafts of a book chapter, papers, and publications, newsletters, press releases, publicity, and Urban Middle Grade Network information.
