Biographical NoteReturn to Top

BillRhoades is a collector of Northwest Art, residing in Central Oregon. He is a native Oregonian and outdoors-man. Rhoades' interest in art collecting includes American Indian basketry and modern Northwest prints and paintings. In 1997, he made arrangements with Roger Hull, Professor Emeritus of Art History at Willamette University, to begin making donations of art to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. His donations include works by Jack McLarty, Coralee Popp, John Stahl and Manuel Izquierdo. Rhoades' goal in 1997 was to donate at least 100 works of art to the Hallie Ford Museum. By 2005 he had already accomplished and exceeded that goal.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The BillRhoades Northwest Art Archive is a collection of artifacts, interviews, photographs and printed materials from a wide variety of Northwest artists. BillRhoades has been an advocate for Northwest Art since before 1997, when he began donating collected artworks to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. In addition to collecting and donating artwork, Rhoades has collected printed materials, interviews, artifacts, and correspondence that highlight Northwest artists and their work. This Archive includes the work of Northwest sculptors, painters, printmakers, and photographers. Also included are newsletters and exhibition materials from institutions such as the Portland Art Museum, the Fountain Gallery of Art and the Seattle Art Dealers Association. Along with the representation of Northwest art, are photographs and correspondence with Rhoades and his family and friends covering topics of dogs, travel, and hunting.

Detailed Description of the CollectionReturn to Top

Series I:  Correspondence, 1997-2014,   (bulk 2004-2014) Return to Top

Series I consists of correspondence between BillRhoades and various artists, gallery owners, friends, and relatives. Topics mainly focus on Rhoades’ interest in trading and collecting art, and donating artwork to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art and the Portland Community College Rock Creek campus. Included are inquiries to artists and art galleries regarding potential trades for artwork, as well as reference to Rhoades' work as a liaison between artists and museums. Correspondence also gives a glimpse of Rhoades’ life as a pet owner and avid outdoorsman.

The majority of the correspondence consists of printed emails with some handwritten letters and cards throughout the collection. Files retain original order, organized by name. Correspondence within each file is organized chronologically. The majority of the correspondence dates 2004 to 2010.

Napkin and paper drawings
This collection of napkin and paper drawings were done during a New Year's Eve celebration at "The Barn" in Tillamook. One artist would begin a drawing on a folded napkin and pass it on for another artist to continue. Artists could not look at the work of the previous artist aside from a few lines that could extend over to the next fold. Contributors to these napkin drawings include Manuel Izquierdo, Richard Thompson, John Stahl, Michael Neuman, and Coralee Popp.
