Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ann Prior Jarvis, born in Middlesex, London, England, in 1829, joined the LDS Church in 1848. The story is one of privation in England and destitution in Boston after arriving in the United States as converts. They were told by George Q. Cannon to leave Boston for Florence, Nebraska, because of Ann's failing health. In Florence, George Jarvis made tents and wagon covers, but he was anxious to get to Zion. George Q. Cannon had given permission for them to share one of his wagons with a family by the name of Hunt. Cannon's promise, however, was not carried out and Jarvis and his family walked to Zion, arriving in 1860. In 1861 they answered a call for volunteers to go to St. George. They arrived there on 5 December 1861. Ann was thirty-one years old and had eight children. Again they endured poverty. On 1 November 1885, she writes in the last paragraph of the autobiography of her joy in the decision they made to join the Jarvis, Ann Prior, 1829-1913 Church and cites her many blessings.
