Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Gavin Douglas is an ethnomusicologist, musician, author, researcher, and teacher. Douglas holds a BMUS degree with a focus on classical guitar and a BA degree in philosophy from Queen's University in Ontario, Canada; an MM in ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin; and a PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. He is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's School of Music, Theatre and Dance in 2002. Douglas' ongoing fieldwork in Myanmar (Burma) focuses on the state patronage of traditional music, ethnic minority traditions, and the soundscapes of Theravada Buddhism.

Contents: Damma Gita "Aungkyin shi ba" and Introduction to Burmese Musical Instruments (filmed in 1993 by Gita Lulin Maung Ko Ko).
Video is roughly divided into 2 sections: first section includes a Damma Gita (or religious music) piece (or collection of pieces) entitled Aungkyin Shi Ba (The Buddha's eight glorious victories), written by Gita Lulin Maung Ko Ko (U Ko Ko), performed by lay Buddhists at various shrines & temples around the country; this section is produced & edited, possibly created for Burmese television. The second section includes raw footage of the saung gauk, hne, palwei, and instruments of the saing waing ensemble; a general introduction to Burmese instruments (also put together by U Ko Ko).
This videotape has been copied multiple times & is of somewhat poor quality (notes from collector's log).
