Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Grassy Bay Timber Company Railway operated between about 1921 and 1928 at Grassy Bay. The locomotive depicted in the photographs is likely from the latter years of the railway. The Grassy Bay Timber Company camp was located on the Loughborough Inlet in British Columbia. The Grassy bay Timer Company Railway is shown in the 1922 Annual Report, BC Department of Railways (published in Sessional Papers for the year ending Dec. 31 1921).They had 3.5 mioles of track, 1 locomotive, and 20 single trucks (these were known as disconnect trucks in the trade). The logs were spanned between them. The railway was standard gauge. In 1924, it shows 6.5 miles of track and two water cars, 14 logging cars, 6 logging trucks (railway truck as above), one workmans car and one speeder. This suggests they were upgrading their equipment with the logging cars which most likely had air brakes where the individual trucks did not. The Railway does not show up in the 1925 or 1928 reports, probably indicating it was inactive or had been ended.
