Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Joseph A. Mussulman was born in 1928. He received his bachelors and masters degrees in music from Northwestern University in 1950 and 1951. Mussulman then received his doctorate degree in humanities from Syracuse University. Eventually he became a professor in the University of Montana’s Department of Music in the 1950s. He retired in 1985.
Mussulman published on a wide range of topics including Montana history, music history, biography and cartography. He is an expert on the Lewis and Clark expedition and created the website Discovering Lewis and Clark at www.lewis-clark.org. Mussulman’s work as a professor, author and presenter have been acknowledged with numerous local, state and national awards.
Mussulman worked with the Friends of the Rattlesnake from shortly after its inception in 1972 until November 1978. He served on the Board of Directors from 1974 to 1978 and served two consecutive terms as president in 1976 and 1977. He helped gain wide community support for the organization through his outreach programs including speeches, public discussions and slide shows.
Joseph Mussulman died in Missoula on September 10, 2017.

This collection contains papers from Mussulman’s work with the Friends of the Rattlesnake to create the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness, minor study of other recreation areas near Missoula, Montana, and his research regarding Montana music. It is divided into two series.
Series I, Wilderness Papers, includes papers from the Friends of the Rattlesnake, Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness research, and drafts of Forest Service brochures. It is divided into three subseries. Subseries 1, Friends of the Rattlesnake Papers, includes correspondence, notes, use studies, logs, surveys, maps, newsletters, by-laws, a speech, and publications. These papers remain in their original order. Subseries 2, Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness Research Papers, contains correspondence, clippings, testimonies, reports, notes, management plans, memos, publications maps, and photographs. Items of special interests to researchers may be An Annotated Bibliography of Sources of Information about the RNRAW compiled by Mussulman and a management plan sketch and Depreciative Behavior in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area: Recommendations for Management Actions and Reactions both written by Mussulman. These papers remain in their original order. Subseries 3, Forest Service Brochures, contains drafts of brochures for the Nine Mile, Blue Mountain, Pattee Canyon, and Welcome Creek Recreation. These papers remain in their original order.
Series II, Montana Music Papers, contains research materials Mussulman collected while working on his Montana Music project. It includes articles, correspondence, notes, interviews, oral history interview permission agreements, notes, pamphlets, photos, historical accounts, programs, clippings, an audio tape and expense records. These materials remain in original order, which is alphabetical by subject.
