Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The schooner Wawona launched from the H. D. Bendixen Shipyard in Fairhaven, California, on September 12, 1897. The Wawona was the largest three-masted sailing schooner ever built in North America. The Wawona was built to haul lumber for the Dolbeer & Carson Lumber Company of Eureka, California, and did so for seventeen years. She was then used for the Bering Sea codfishing trade from 1914 until World War II, when the Wawona was used by the United States government to haul supplies from Puget Sound to Alaska. After two more years of codfishing after the war, the schooner sat largely unused until 1963, when a group of King County citizens purchased the Wawona for use as a maritime museum.

In 1970, the Wawona was the first vessel to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was designated a Seattle landmark in 1977. Unfortunately, by 2005 various problems including a beetle infestation led to the decision to demolish the schooner. Artist John Grade saved portions of the Wawona and created a sculpture located at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI).
