- Albin Walter Norblad, Sr. (1881-1960) served as Astoria's City Attorney from 1910-1915, was elected to the state Senate elected Senate President in 1929, and served as Governor of Oregon from 1929 to 1931. The collection contains speeches, correspondence, promotional and special interest literature, historical studies, right and left wing party literature, Oregon coast highway information, printed material and mementoes, and official papers of the Governor's office.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
Albin Walter Norblad, Sr. (1881-1960) was born in Malmo, Sweden, and moved with his family to Michigan when he was a child. He became a lawyer and practiced first in Michigan then moved with his family to Astoria, Oregon. He served as Astoria's City Attorney from 1910-1915. He was elected to the state Senate in 1918 and was elected Senate President in 1929. As Senate President he succeeded to the governorship and served as Governor of Oregon from 1929 to 1931, but lost the Republication primary contest for Governor in 1930. After serving as Governor Norblad returned to Astoria to practice law. Norblad was known as one of the founders of the Oregon coast highway movement, otherwise known as the "Roosevelt Highway."
His son, A. Walter Norblad, Jr. served in the Oregon House of Representatives and the US Congress. His grandson, Albin W. Norblad III, is an Oregon Circuit Court judge (as of 2012).
