Historical Note

Allied Arts of Seattle is a citizen advocacy group for the arts. It was established in 1954 to work "for a more beautiful city and a lively and diverse arts scene." In addition to promoting the arts, it also participates in city planning and beautification, and historic preservation. Through the Allied Arts Foundation, it awards grants and sponsors grant applications for artists and arts organizations. It also raises money to assist small arts organizations and artists through Allied Arts Foundation Federation. Allied Arts of Seattle has launched other organizations, such as Washington Roadside Council and Friends of the Market. It successfully lobbied for the creation of the Municipal Arts Commission of Seattle and the Washington State Arts Commission.

The Allied Arts Foundation was organized in 1968 as a tax-exempt organizaton to support activities in the arts, literature, and historic preservation of communities of the Puget Sound region. It has sponsored programs funded from other sources when a local sponsor was needed.
