Historical NoteReturn to Top

Lurton Blassingame (1904-1988) is one of the earliest and most respected publishing agents. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and attended Columbia where he wrote his masters thesis on the history of pulp fiction. His first notable job was as a film writer in Hollywood. In 1937 he founded the American Library Foundation with William Allen. He wrote numerous articles for Writer's Digest, giving advice on the fiction markets during the era when pulp literature was popular, formed a public relations firm named Houston Branch Associates which later merged with Eleanor Wood's Spectrum Literary Agency in 1978.

The Lurton Blassingame Literary Agency Records comprise a decade's worth of correspondence with authors, publishers, magazines, newspapers, filmmakers, agents, etc. ajor correspondents are: Russell Annabel, Joe Archibald, Joe Brooks, Charles Einstein, Robert Heinlein, A. A. Hoehling, Ted Janes, James Joseph, David Lavender, Keith Monroe, John Reese, Andy Russell, Margaret Self, Don Stanford, George Sullivan. The collection includes two snapshots, one of Del Annabel posing with moose antlers, the other of Tex Cobb with dog and body of wolf, circa 1950s-1960s.
