The Libraries development program started in 1986 when Sarah C. Michalak was asked by Merle N. Boylan, Director of University Libraries, to take on fund raising responsibilities as Assistant Director for Library Development and Planning. Gifts joined Development on October 1st, 1991 and left on June 1st, 1997. In the autumn of 2009, the name changed from Office of Development to Office of Advancement.
