Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The "Meadows" Race Track was built in 1902 at Georgetown near Seattle, designed for horse races over a 10-day racing season. An opulent clubhouse catered to the wealthy who came to watch the races. In 1903, the racing season was extended to 30 days each summer. In 1905, the "Meadows" began to race automobiles. The track was also a good location for early airplane flights some of which ended up in the nearby pond at the racetrack.

Duckabush and the Duckabush River are located along the Hood Canal on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. During the early part of the 20th Century, Duckabush was a popular vacation destination for the wealthy.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of photographs of various family outings from April to July 1907 which are grouped into three series. They include the following locations: most probably Seattle during the visit of General Booth (the founder of the Salvation Army), the pond at the "Meadows" Race Track at Georgetown, and Duckabush along the Hood Canal on the Olympic Peninsula. Each series features the same individuals although it is not know whether they are the same individuals in the whole collection.

Other Descriptive InformationReturn to Top

The location of the first series of photographs comes from biographical information concerning the life of General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army. In 1907, General Booth embarked on a world tour. General Booth traveled to Seattle before visiting Vancouver. It is recorded that General Booth spent his 78th birthday, April 10, 1907, aboard the ship from Vancouver to Japan. Therefore, it is most probable that General Booth departed from Seattle the first week of April from the Great Northern Docks.
