M. Donald Thomas was the superintendent for the Salt Lake City school district in the 1970s-1980s, as well as a collector of historical documents.

The M. Donald Thomas papers contain education publications, as well as letters signed by political figures.

The 2012 addendum contains a variety of historical letters, including some related to the Thomas family. Of particular interest is a series of 47 letters written between 1861 and 1864 by John Carnes, soldier for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
