Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was born in Pennsylvania. He worked for a printer in Philadelphia before relocating to San Francisco where he worked as a lithographer for Kuchel & Dressel, 1861-1867, before opening his own business designing and printing stock certificates, maps and other documents for companies like Wells Fargo Mining, Levi, Strauss, and Ghirardelli Chocolate as well as drawing topographical illustrations for the 1878 Illustrated History of San Francisco. In the 1870s, Brown sold his printing business to become a full-time artist, painting landscapes of the Pacific Northwest at his studios in British Columbia, Portland, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington. In 1893, Brown became a draftsmanf or the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Minnesota.
