Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Roger Clayton Larson (1918-1980) was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, to Oscar William and Clara (Weik) Larson. He attended St. Olaf College from 1938 to 1941, before serving in the United States Navy. Larson then returned to the University of Minnesota where he received his Physical Therapy Certification in 1946 and his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1947. Larson received his Master's degree from the State College of Washington (now Washington State University) in 1951, while serving as an Instructor of Physical Education with the Department of Physical Education for Men, beginning in 1947. He became a full professor in 1970. His research and community service focused on rehabilitation for children with disabilities. Larson was the founder and director of Camp WSU (also referred to as Camp Easter Seal), a teacher training facility and camp for youth with disabilities, located on 40 acres at Lake Coeur d'Alene, ID. The facilities were later named Camp Roger Larson in his honor. He retired from WSU in 1980.
