Historical Note
Agricultural Economics courses were taught by the Agronomy Department at Oregon Agricultural College early in the 20th century. In 1917, the Agronomy Department was divided into four programs, including the Farm Management Department. Farm Management was combined with the Agricultural Economics Department in 1949. The department was renamed Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1974.
R. Donald Langmo came to OSU in 1948 and taught in the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department. Langmo specialized in the study of industrial engineering as applied to the harvest and processing of agricultural products.
Content Description
The Agricultural and Resource Economics Department Photographs depict Oregon agricultural scenes, primarily during two time periods: the 1920s-1940s and 1960s-1970s. The images taken in the 1920s-1940s comprise Series I-V and were taken by County Extension Agents and Farm Management Department faculty members including Halbert Selby (the predominant photographer), Curtis Mumford, George Hyslop, Henry Scudder, Harry Schoth, and Phillip Fortner. For many of the photographs, the photographer is identified as "H.E.S.", which is likely Halbert E. Selby. These images primarily depict crop harvesting techniques and equipment, livestock grazing, pasture land, farm buildings, irrigation projects, stream erosion, and the effects of the 1945/46 flood on a couple of Willamette Valley farms. These images were assigned item numbers and described by the creators; the descriptions include details of the subject matter, the location, date, and photographer. A few of the descriptions identify the farm that is depicted. Many of the images were published in Extension bulletins and circulars. These photographs also include several images of farms in Idaho and Washington.
Series VI and VII consist of images taken by R. Donald Langmo and other Agricultural and Resource Economics Department faculty of fruit harvesting and processing in the 1960s-1970s. These photographs depict harvesting and processing operations at the Duckwall Fruit Processing Plant in Hood River, Oregon and Wenatchee Valley Orchards in Washington. These images show individuals harvesting and processing apples and pears by hand as well as with machinery.
The photographs include 895 prints, 807 film negatives, and 24 color slides. The bulk of the negatives are nitrate and are housed separately. A small number of the nitrate negatives exhibit minimal deterioration such as discoloration or oxidation. Safety negatives are housed with prints. The negatives in Series I-V are 5x7 (primarily) and 4x5 sheet negatives; the negatives in Series VI and VII are 35 mm format. Series VI includes a few color prints; all other prints and negatives are b/w.
