Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, Gerard Schwarz graduated from New York City's High School of Performing Arts and the Julliard School of Music and performed as principal trumpeter for the New York Philharmonic until 1973. He served as Music Director of the Seattle Symphony from 1985-2011.

Scope and Content: Interview conducted with Arny Robbins on July 19, 2001. Schwarz recounts his family, musical education, and religious life in New Jersey as well as his efforts to raise the quality and profile of the Seattle Symphony during his tenure as Musical Director. He specifically discusses the process of building Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle.

Scope and Content: Interview conducted with Steve Adler and Richard Hobbs on November 2, 2010. Schwarz discusses working as Musical Director of the Mostly Mozart festival in New York City, his transition from performing as a trumpeter to conducting, and his conducting career before coming to Seattle. He also describes his tenure as Musical Director of the Seattle Symphony including its involvement with the Seattle ballet and opera companies, its repertoire and personnel over the years, as well as its special projects including Music of Remembrance
