Biographical Note

The Esk'etemc are a First Nations people in the Cariboo Regional District of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Since the beginning of the colonial period, the Esk’etemc First Nation, a tribe Indigenous to the area surrounding Alkali Lake have been involved in an ongoing, and ever-increasing, obligatory discourse with the settlers, missionaries, government officials, lawyers, and anthropologists. Many tribal members at Alkali Lake today are strongly aware of, and sometimes participate in, the battles waged in courts over fishing and hunting and land-use rights. During the 1990s, direct action through the preparation of a land claim has meant that much attention has been paid to mapping where and how people use territory for hunting and gathering. Increasingly, Shushwap practices must be explained and justified to outsiders in an attempt to defend and maintain sovereignty over their life ways.
