Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ustad Zakir Hussain (1951-) is a tabla player, composer, percussionist, music producer, and actor from Mumbai, India. He played his first concert at the age of seven and was touring by age eleven. He studied and taught briefly at the University of Washington before moving to California to perform with tabla player Ali Akbar Khan. He performed as many as 150 concerts a year and is credited, along with his father Alla Rakha, with helping to popularize the tabla internationally. He was presented with many awards during his career including the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002.
