John B. Horner taught English and history at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) from 1891 until his death in 1933. He founded the college museum and and wrote extensively on Oregon history and literature.

Collection consists of charts, illustrations, diagrams, and documents concerning the Kalapuya mounds (spelled "Calapooia" on collection materials); the typescript text of an address, "Old Oregon vs. New Oregon," given by John B. Horner before the Oregon Pioneer Association in June 1932; a handwritten letter to Horner from Gertrude Balch Ingalls, September 15, 1902, with a biographical sketch of her brother, Frederic Homer Balch; and a handwritten letter to Horner from O. C. Applegate, March 1932, with a letter of transmittal.
