Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert Gaston "Bob" Moch (June 20, 1914—January 18, 2005) was an American rower, coach, and lawyer who famously competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was born and raised in Montesano, Washington by an American mother, Fleeta Belle, who was a homemaker, and a Swiss father, Gaston, who operated a jewelry store. In 1932, Robert Moch entered the University of Washington, keeping busy as a member of multiple sports and academic honor societies for engineering. He joined the University of Washington Crew team as a freshman coxswain, owing to his slight frame and height. By 1936, he was selected to compete at the Varsity level by head coach Al Ulbrickson, where he eventually went on to the 1936 Olympics and won gold as coxswain in the Men's eight event.

After graduating, Robert Moch coached alongside Ulbrickson for four years as his assistant, before moving on to Boston to coach crew at the Massacusetts Institute of Technology in 1940 and to attend Harvard Law. After completing his degree, Robert Moch passed the bar exam in Massachusetts and Washington, and moved back to his home state to practice law in the Seattle area, even defending clients in front of the Supreme Court during the course of his successful career. He remained an avid patron of crew his whole life, and supported many rowing clubs, teams, and programs.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin were one of two Olympic games held during Nazi Germany. The first place win of the Varsity Husky Crew in the Men's eight event—over both the German and Italian teams—was seen by some as an ideological, socio-economic, and athletic mark of the inferiority of fascist governments, and the superiority of American-style liberal democracy. The 1936 Summer Olympics brought the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany to mainstream politics, where it became a contested political issue, and contributed in no small part to the events of World War Two.

Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta
Scope and Content: The Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta is the oldest national competition for collegiate rowing in the US. The Regatta was held off-and-on in Poughkeepsie, NY on the mid Hudson River from 1895 to 1951, where the city became synonymous with the event. In 1936, Al Ulbrickson and his Varsity team arrived to compete against Cornell, Princeton, Syracuse University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania, and the United States Naval Academy, after going against Cal at the Pacific Coast Regatta months earlier. Here, the Varsity team demonstrated Robert Moch's signature delayed-push coxswaining tactic, which worked to great effect, publicity, and fanfare.

Olympic trials
Scope and Content: After their successes at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta and the earlier Pacific Coast Regatta, Al "Dour Dane" Ulbrickson felt confident that his Varsity team could win the right to represent the US at the Berlin Olympics (inasmuch as he let on). Competing at Princeton University on placid Lake Carnegie, the Huskies would trounce their hosts, the Univeristy of Pennsylvania, and the New York Athletic Club to participate in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics.

General Notes: From attached material on verso: There goes the Woodlawn Cup, emblematic of national rowing supremacy, from the hands of Henry Penn Burke, chairman of the American Olympic Rowing Committee, into the hands of Robert Moch, tiny Washingon coxswain. Its significance is very real. It means Washington, victorious Sunday over Pennsylvania, California, and the New York Athletic Club, represents the United States in the Olympic Games, one month away—provided sufficient money is raised in Seattle to make it possible [...].

After graduation
Scope and Content: Robert Moch was the only person from the 1936 Varsity Husky Crew team to graduate after the Olympics. Al Ulbrickson offered Robert Moch the opportunity to become the Assistant Coach of the Washington Huskies, where he coached his previous teammates who remained at the Varsity level. He remained in his position until 1938, after which he accepted a coaching position with Harvard Athletics and an offer to study at Harvard Law School.
Scope and Content: Photos in Poughkeepsie, New York probably take place at the 1937 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, which Moch coached.
