As of 2018, Jacqueline Peterson (b. 1943) is professor emerita of History and Comparative American Cultures at Washington State University Vancouver. Peterson was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1970. She then pursued her Master's and Doctoral degrees, also from the University of Illinois, in 1972 and 1981, respectively. She is best known for the directing and curating a monumental, 7000 square foot exhibit titled "Sacred Encounters: The Society of Jesus and the Indians of the Northwest." The exhibit centered on a collection of art, maps, and manuscripts that showcased interactions between inland Indian tribes and Jesuit missionaries. The project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and toured the United States from 1993 to 1995. Peterson retired from WSU in 2010.

This collection of Jacqueline Peterson's papers consists primarily of materials related to the exhibit "Sacred Encounters." It includes papers, maps (reproductions), photographs (mainly object documentation), correspondence, collected research material, audiovisual media (including source recordings). The papers also include some files related to Dr. Peterson's other projects, and to her professional activities as a historian and Washington State University faculty member.

Acquisition Information

Jacqueline Peterson donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries in multiple installments. These 5 individual accessions (MS 2008-34, MS 2009-05, MS 2009-16, MS 2010-26, MS 2011-35) were combined in 2012 by Professor Peterson and MASC staff. Additional materials were received in February 2017, and added to this accession (boxes 44-47; 3.5 linear feet).
