Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Scandinavian Archives was begun prior to 1958 in conjunction with a general progarm to strengthen the UW Libraries Scandinavian holdings. Records were collected by UW professor Walter Johnson and Harry Fabbe, publisher of the Swedish language newspaper Svenska Posten . Fabbe solicited records through his newspaper, resulting in donations primarily from the Swedish community.
For several years, beginning in 1972, library staff members Emma Nelson and Clinton Hude worked to broaden the archival holdings related to Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic communities, primarily in Seattle.
During 1975-1976, the Emigrantsinstitutet in Vaxjo, Sweden collaborated with the UW Libraries on a project to microfilm Swedish-American church records in the Pacific Northwest.

Arrangement
The collection is arranged by nationality. The earliest collections obtained by Mr. Johnson and Mr. Fabbe were accessioned as additions to this accession (0356-001). Collections acquired after about 1972 were accessioned separately. These later accessions are not listed in this inventory, but most can be found by searching the heading "Scandinavian Archives" as a search term in the Special Collections Collection Guides
