Biographical NoteReturn to Top

E. Burke Wylie moved to Iowa as a young man shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War, leaving his parents and brothers behind in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the 31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Co. K, in August 1862, in response to President Lincolns call for 300,000 volunteers.

Wylie served under Generals Grant and Sherman during some of their major campaigns, including Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. He remained with the Western Army throughout the war and was discharged in July 1865.
