Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1875 the first fair association in western Montana was organized. The Western Montana Agricultural, Mechanical and Mineral Association raised money for the fair, which began in 1876, by selling 400 shares at $25 per share. The Western Montana Fair Board was organized in 1879; members included Alfred Cave, B.A. Wolf, Frank Worden, R.A. Eddy, William Kennedy, J.P. Reinhard, John Rankin, Tom Pomeroy, Christopher P. Higgins and Ben Kron. Fairs at this time were held on the Higgins ranch property, about three miles south of Missoula. Attractions at the early fairs included bicycle races, walking races, a fat man's race, and shot put and hammer throwing contests. Horse racing was also a main event, with $1,500 given to the man whose horse could win three five-mile heats. The fair later moved northwest of Missoula to Mullan Road.

The Missoula County Fair and Horse Racing Association sold shares to support the fair. William Kennedy, John Rankin and Christopher P. Higgins continued their support for the fair by buying stock in this association.
