Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Dutch Harbor is a harbor on Amaknak Island in Unalaska, Alaska. It was the location of the Battle of Dutch Harbor in June 1942, and was one of the few sites, besides the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, in American territory to be bombed by the Japanese during World War II. Attu Island was invaded by the Japanese during the war and was the site of the only land battle on American land.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Most photographs feature various shipping and oil-related activities at Dutch Harbor and the town of Unalaska, with a few showing the Atka, Aleutian, Pribilof and Shumagin Islands, as well as the Kodiak Archipelago.
