Biographical Note

Tacoma architect Alan Curtis Liddle was a prominent figure in that city's civic life. He played an active role in the development of the Old City Hall Historic District in Tacoma, and participated in numerous other civic projects and advocacy for historic preservation, arts and cultural engagement in the Tacoma area. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Liddle was born in 1922 in Tacoma. He received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Washington in 1948. After graduation, he worked for a year as a draftsman at Lea, Pearson and Richards, Architects in Tacoma. Around 1952, he began his own firm in Tacoma. Liddle returned to the University of Washington as Assistant Professor, 1953-1954. In 1957, he created the firm of Liddle and Jones. His partnership with Robert Jones continued until 1968, after which he struck out on his own again. From 1977 to 1998, Liddle worked with Robert Jacklin in the firm of Liddle and Jacklin. Liddle became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1970. Liddle died in 2009.
