Biographical Note

Howard James Stroud, A.B., M.P.H., was born February 10, 1916 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended high school at South High School in Grand Rapids and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from which he received a Masters Degree in Public Health Education. Stroud was married for 67 years and fathered four children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. One son passed away in 2006.

Howard J. Stroud was a health educator of atomic energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and at Humble Oil and Refining Company, Medical Division, in Houston, Texas. Stroud was also an Associate with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Subsequently, he served as Director of the Oregon Heart Association in Portland, Oregon.

Honors for 20 years of service as Director of the Oregon Heart Association Awards and recognition as a volunteer speaker for the United Way campaign in 1982.

The collection consists of artifacts: pacemakers, shaping wires, heart valves, a plastinated heart, two hearts encased in plastic and one heart model; documents; images: photographs (mounted and un-mounted), radiographic film and negatives; news clippings, published articles and other publications; and 2 brief cases: one labeled "$100,000,000 fund."
