Biographical NoteReturn to Top

The "Yellowstone Park Diary" is an account of a tourist group's travels by coach through Yellowstone National Park in 1911. The author is presumably Louis E. "Doc" Downing, a Hamilton, Montana, druggist who was accompanied on his Yellowstone travels by his brother, Mason K. Downing, of Massachusetts. Louis Downing was the proprietor of the Bitter Root Drug Store, according to the 1920 census. He was born in Montana around 1888 to George S. (1850-1939) and Mary F. Downing (1853-1921), both natives of Massachusetts. In 1920, Downing married Florence (1890-1960), a Nevada native, and had a daughter, Elisabeth, who was born around 1916 in Oregon. The tourist group known as the "Family" in the "Yellowstone Park Diary" includes Lee Walton of Butte, Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell of Mt. Hope, Kansas, Grace Banker and her sister, Helen Banker, of Aurora, Illinois, Marion B. "Jane" James and Laura L."Sis" Atemeyer of Chicago, Illinois, and D.T. "St. Louis" Shockley of St. Louis, Missouri.
