Melvin Clarke George (1849-1933) was born in Ohio and came to Oregon with his parents in 1851. He was educated at Santiam Academy and Willamette University. He was an Oregon state senator, 1876-1880, and U.S. Representative, 1880-1884 (Republican), and later practiced law in Portland.

The collection contains addresses (speeches), essays and letters to newspapers, manuscripts, legal documetns, newspapers, artwork and scrapbooks.

The addresses were speeches given before such groups as the Linn County Agricultural Association, Sons of the American Revolution, American Medical Association, and the Oregon Bar Association.

Manuscripts consist of George's literary work on the Columbia highway scenic route and include related correspondence.

Newspapers include five manuscript periodicals, "The Gem" (1867) and "The Golden Epoch" (1867), both published Willamette University students; "The Hesperian" (undated), published in Lebanon, Oregon; "The Review" (1869), published by the Lebanon, Oregon lodge, Good Templars; and "The Students Journal" (1867), published by students of Santiam Academy, Lebanon, Oregon.

The collection includes essays and letters written to newspapers by George, two scrapbooks, copies of photographs of the George family, and juvenilia artwork consisting of crude watercolors and drawings.
