Tape recorded interview covering the years 1930-1939, taken between July and August 1999; transcript (bound and titled "The Rise of Nazism Before World War II: Memories of Germany"), portrait of Hilde, and Nazi document bound with transcript.
Mrs. Birnbaum discusses her experiences in Europe from 1930 to 1939, especially her time in Germany. She talks about her reasons for leaving Germany in 1933, and describes how she ultimately got her family out of Germany. She describes German politics during the rise of the Nazis, and being declared an enemy of the German Reich in 1937. Mrs. Birnbaum discusses many events in Germany leading up to the Holocaust, including the treatment of Jews in every day life, as well as national politics, and the rise of anti-Jewish laws.
