Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Cora Averill was born April 25, 1886 in Townsend, Montana to Truman and Nellie Averill. The second of the couple’s five children and the eldest daughter, Cora was part of the first graduating class from Townsend High School in 1904. She attended Montana State University (now the University of Montana-Missoula) and was a member of Penetralia, Theta Phi (now a part of Kappa Alpha Theta), the Associated Students of the University of Montana, Clarkia, and the Oratorical Association. She graduated with honors with a B.A. in 1907.
Averill married Norman Sealy Poole on June 4, 1908. They would have two children, Martha and Norman (Jack). After living in different parts of Montana, Illinois, and Minnesota, the family returned to Townsend, Montana. Cora taught at the high schools in both Townsend and Harlowton. She was an active member of the community, serving with the Townsend Woman’s Club, Primrose Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Book Chat Club, the Townsend Garden Club, and was a member of the Episcopal Church. Her husband, Norman, passed away in 1949.
Cora Averill Poole passed away in March of 1959 in Townsend, Montana after an extended illness.
