Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John Alexander Fraser was a carpenter who did contract work for the N. J. Blagen firm of Portland, Oregon. He lived in Astoria and Portland, Oregon, and in Los Angeles, California. He married Flora Moehnke in 1891, and they had a son, John Henry. John A. Fraser died sometime between 1896 and 1900.

John Henry Fraser earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon Agricultural College (later Oregon State University) in 1916. During World War I, he served in the 116th Engineers. After the war, he worked for the Bonneville Power Administration. He married Cleo Marie Madden in 1923. The couple had two sons: John Henry, Jr. and Bruce. Fraser died in 1975 in Portland, Oregon.

Flora C. Moehnke Fraser (1869-1944) was a Canadian-American who worked as a seamstress in Clackamas County, Oregon.

The collection primarily consists of the papers of John A. Fraser and his son, John H. Fraser. John A. Fraser's papers consist of correspondence addressed to him and greeting cards he sent to John H. Fraser in 1896. John H. Fraser's papers include letters he wrote to his mother, Flora C. Fraser, while he was serving in World War I; letters he received; and publications and ephemera relating to his education and his military service. Additional materials include correspondence Flora C. Fraser received from people other than her husband and son; and travel and advertising ephemera likely collected by both John A. and John H. Fraser.
