Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Artist and educator Jo Hockenhull joined the faculty of Washington State University in 1972. She established the printmaking program in the Fine Arts Department that year, and later headed the university's Women's Studies program (1986-1996). She earned her A.B. degree from Knox College (1963) and her M.A. from the University of Iowa (1966). She is a painter, illustrator, and printmaker.

This collection consists of professional papers of artist and educator Jo Hockenhull, The papers relate to her involvement in women's studies, including the Women in Literature (WIL) group's production of the book "Women and the Journey" published by WSU Press in 1993. The WIL papers include audio and video recordings of a 1988 retreat related to this project, and a small quantity of material related to the exhibit and book "A Song to the Creator" (1996). The collection includes artists' materials (slides, photographs, resumes, publicity materials) collected by Hockenhull in her research on Eastern Washington women artists for a chapter in the book "Modernism and Beyond: Women Artists of the Pacific Northwest" (1993).

Box 1. Women in Literature (WIL). Retreat materials, including papers, audio and video recordings and photographs, related to "Women and the Journey." Also papers related to "A Song to the Creator."
Box 2. Papers (correspondence, notes, and drafts) and collected artists' materials related to "Modernism and Beyond: Women Artists of the Pacific Northwest."
