M. Hamlin Cannon was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 12 September 1909. He was a historian by profession and received his Ph.D. from American University in Washington, D.C. (1950). He wrote many articles on LDS Church and military history. M. Hamlin Cannon was the grandnephew of George Q. Cannon. He married Kathleen O'Connor in 1945 and he died in 1978.
