Historical NoteReturn to Top

Allen Hendershott Eaton (1878-1962) was an advocate, author, curator, and historian of American craft. He was a graduate of the University of Oregon in 1902 and later joined the faculty of the University of Oregon and served as a member of the Oregon Legislature. Public belief in Eaton holding pro-German sentiments notably caused him to be politically ousted from both of these roles in Oregon in 1918, after which he moved to New York City. Eaton spent most of his career as a scholar and champion of the American Craft Revival movement, and he published a seminal work on the movement in 1937, Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands.
