Historical NoteReturn to Top
The University of Montana in Missoula first opened for classes in 1895, moving to its current location at the base of Mount Sentinel in 1899. Initially called the University of Montana, the university went through several name changes. With the establishment of the Montana University System in 1913, it became the State University of Montana. The name changed again in 1935 to Montana State University. In 1965, the institution again became the University of Montana as decreed by state legislation that renamed five of the state's colleges to "more accurately describe the schools' respective functions."

This collection consists of artifacts created by or about the University of Montana in Missoula (UM) from 1907 to 2022. The artifacts highlight campus life and traditions, particularly as experienced by UM students.

Processing Note
In 2017, the UM artifacts were removed from the University Publications (UPUBs) collection to be processed as this collection, RG 094. In 2019, photos were taken of each artifact and uploaded to the University of Montana’s online repository, ScholarWorks.
