- The military correspondence collection (1942-1957) consist of correspondence and assorted materials related to two Utah residents who participated in World War II as officers in the U.S. Army stationed in Western Europe. A third military serviceman served in the U.S. Navy during the mid 1950s while his assignment included time spent in Japan, the Phillipines, Okinawa, and Formosa.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
Stratford L. Wendelboe was born on 25 November 1920 in Tillamook, Oregon. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Price and Salt Lake City, Utah. While enrolled at the University of Utah as a member of the ROTC program, he was commissioned to the rank of a Second Lieutenant and entered the U.S. Army in early 1945. Stratford spent the remainder of World War II as an artillery communications officer stationed in the Rhineland. Following his discharge, Wendelboe returned to the University of Utah where he completed his studies majoring in zoology. On 14 May 1950 he married Martha Doris Parker. After working as a securities and insurance saleman, Stratford formed a distributing company in the 1970s. An active member of the L.D.S. church, he and his wife served on a mission in Cambodia and were employees of the church's employment center. On 26 June 2013. he passed away.
Homer F. Stephens was born on 30 July 1919 in Victor Teton, Idaho. Stephens served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant assigned to the Western Front in Europe during World War II. A platoon commander in the 547th Anti-Artilery Battalion, Homer was awarded a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service rendered in military operations against Germany. After the war, Stephens resided in Provo, Utah where he died on 14 January 2008.
