Historical NoteReturn to Top

Kent Logan Walgren (1947-2003) was born on 17 February 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Salt Lake City's Skyline High School in 1965 and earned a B.A. degree from Brigham Young University in 1971 and a J.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1974. Subsequent to practicing law in Heber City during the mid-1970's, Kent served as an administrative law judge for the Utah Department of Commerce and the Utah Public Service Commission for twelve years (1978-1989). From 1989 until 1998 he was an assistant attorney general for the Utah State Committee of Consumer Services. While Kent was involved in these judicial activities, he became immersed in a multi-year investigation of Freemasonry which resulted in a 2002 publication of a two volume work titled "Freemasonry, Anti-Masonry and Illuminism in the United States, 1734-1850: A Bibliography." His interest in the relationship between Freemasonry and LDS theology can be seen in a 1982 article which the Illinois Historical Society deemed as the best written and researched contribution to Illinois history published in that year. An avid bibliophile, Kent owned and operated two used and rare bookstores in Salt Lake City prior to his retirement in 2002. He died of a heart attack in Paris, France, on 2 June 2003.

At top is the coat of arms of Thomas Thynne, 2nd Viscount Weymouth (Grand Master of England in 1735) and a portrait of Sir Richard Steele. At top left corner: "Tom. IV. No. 11"; bottom left corner: "L.F. D. B. inv."; bottom right: "I.F. Scul." Early lodges met in taverns and initiated new members as part of a banquet. The panel in the background lists 129 Masonic lodges operating in 1735, including Lodge 126, "Boston in New England." At the top is an oval portrait of Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729), who founded the English journal, The Tatler, in 1709. This engraving appeared in the book, Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, which was published in 1735 in Amsterdam.
