Biographical Note
Professor of marine geology and university administrator. He was born in 1934 and has been associated with the Department of Oceanography at the University of Washington since 1959. He became a full Professor in 1971 and served as Associate Chairman of the department 1978-1979. In addition he was Chairperson of the Faculty Council 1975-1978; member of the Advisory Council, Quaternary Research Center and adjunct professor 1968-1982; as well as chairperson of the Faculty Planning and Development Committee for the Institute of Marine Studies and adjunct professor 1972-1989. He also served on various committees of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES).

Manuscripts; Department of Oceanography correspondence, interdepartmental memoranda, historical and organizational files, accreditation and annual reports; committee correspondence, minutes and reports; and subject files for various university related activities; 1962-1980.
The papers document the first two decades of McManus' association with the University of Washington and include some of the history and development of the Department of Oceanography, including the graduate program and the Institute for Marine Sciences. The latter forms a significant subgroup of the papers, spanning the period 1976-1984.
Span dates of the accession are 1962-1984.
