Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Laura Varon was born on the island of Rhodes in 1926, one of four children. The Varon family was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Laura was moved to Dachau and then to Bergen Belsen where she was liberated by British forces. She lived in Stockholm for a year with Swedish Jews before she followed her brothers to Belgian Congo; she married Moise Israel in Congo Elizabethville where they had a synagogue with Rabbi Moshe Levy until the revolution in 1960.

5 sound cassettes; transcript: 137 pages

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Vera Federman, with transcript, 1/17/89. Varon discusses her childhood on the island of Rhodes until German occupation in 1944. She describes her family's deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau, life in that camp as well as Dachau and Bergen Belsen, and then recounts her liberation by British forces and subsequent recuperation in Sweden. Varon also describes her time in the Belgian congo where she experienced the revolution in 1960.

Scope and Content: Two reminiscences and one photograph essay prepared for the Surviving Generations of the Holocaust Oral History Project (photocopies). One reminiscence describes family life in Rhodes before World War II and the other concerns the Holocaust.
