Content Description
Correspondence, minutes, curriculum files and publications from the department. Also includes recordings of Chamber Dance performances.
Historical Note
The Dance Division of the University of Washington was created within the School of Drama in 1965. Before then, Modern dance courses were offered through Physical & Health Education and ballet was offered through drama. Students wanting to major in dance had to design their own curriculum through General Studies. In 1975 the division was moved to the School of Music, and in 1988 it grew large enough to become the Dance Program: an autonomous unit with its' own budget. A graduate program was added in 1990. That same year the Chamber Dance Company began to put on public performances.

2.56 cubic feet, (3 boxes containing 77 vhs tapes, 2 betacam cassettes, and 4 u-matic cassettes)46.6 gigabytes, (77 digital files including documents and videos)Historical Note: The Chamber Dance Company's (CDC) mission is to identify, restage, and archive modern and contemporary dance works of artistic significance and to create and produce new dance works created by and with UW Department of Dance graduate students. CDC has performed and recorded over 125 dances choreographed between 1985-2014, and produced and premiered multiple new contemporary works.
Unique to the Chamber Dance Company, is its rare Archive of Modern and Contemporary Dance Repertoire. Founded by Professor Hannah Wiley in 1991, the Chamber Dance Company has performed and recorded over 120 dances from the modern dance canon, exposing audiences to work that they would rarely or never have the chance to see, and allowing the legacy of modern dance choreographers to live on past the end of their lives.
