Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Thomas McArthur Anderson (1836-1917) graduated from St. Mary’s College in Maryland and from Cincinnati Law School. In 1858, he was admitted to the bar and began to practice law in Cincinnati. During the Civil War in 1861, Anderson enlisted as a private in the 65th Ohio Volunteers and shortly thereafter was commissioned Second Lieutenant of the 5th United States Cavalry. He was promoted to captain and served with the 12th United States Infantry. He remained in the army after the war, becoming a colonel in command of the 14th Infantry.

In 1898, as a Brigadier General, Anderson commanded the vanguard of the United States expeditionary force (the Eighth Army Corps) in the Philippines. These men were the first troops to reach the Philippines after George Dewey’s victory against the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Anderson stayed in the Philippines until 1899, fighting in the early stages of the Philippine-American War until he was succeeded by General Henry W. Lawton.

Arrangement

Arranged in 3 series.

  • Series 1, Anderson Family
  • Series 2, Thomas McArthur Anderson
  • Series 3, Charles Anderson Gauld

Custodial History

It remains unclear whether Gauld, Thomas M. Anderson, or another family member brought together the family papers, as both Gauld and Anderson conducted genealogical research.

Acquisition Information

This collection was donated in installments by Charles Anderson Gauld beginning in 1945, with additions made in 1952, 1972, and 1973.

Processing Note

The papers were processed in December, 1991 by Janet Crum.

This accession is a merger of 1973-001, 1973-002 (Anderson, Thomas M.)and 487-001 (Anderson Family).

The arrangement of the notes series in the Gauld series is somewhat random. The original folder headings were retained, but these headings are not always accurate. The notes were originally mingled with clippings, letters, and other material, some of which was related, and some of which was apparently in random order. The subject sub-series consists of articles, clippings, postcards, and miscellaneous material. Subject files were created when there was sufficient material to do so (usually at least two items). The remaining material was placed in the clippings sub-series as unsorted
