Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Norman Henry Thornycroft (1916-1989) crossed the border to live in Bellingham, Washington after leaving Nanaimo, British Columbia, and became a machinist at a cannery in Seattle. At the age of 19 Thornycroft joined the Civilian Conservation Corps 2915 Camp Glacier. He was assigned to work near Mt. Baker. The men in the camp worked on improvement projects in the national forest such as trail cutting, tree felling and construction of a ranger station and lookout and things such as benches and tables. While at Camp Glacier, he witnessed the filming of "Call of the Wild" featuring Clark Gable and Loretta Young. By 1940 he was no longer with the CCC and living with his family in Bellingham, Washington.

Photographic album of the Camp Glacier Civilian Conservation Corps camp in 1935. Shows the camp buildings, the workers, and activities. It also includes photographs of the set of the movie "Call of the Wild" with Clark Gable and Loretta Young on location on Mt. Baker the photographs were all made by Norman Thornycroft.
