Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Aaron Belnap Ross Collection (1957-1971) consists of 35mm color transparencies taken by Dr. Ross, mainly as they pertain to his interest in river running on the Green, Colorado, and other rivers of the western United States. Aaron Belnap Ross was born in Ogden, Utah, on 26 June 1917. After washing out of flight training for the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1941, he became a GP doctor with a practice in Ogden, Utah. He was also an amateur botanist, ornithologist, and photographer, but his real interest lay in running the Green and Colorado Rivers, as well as other rivers, on his own and with Jack Brennan, an early river outfitter who, with Don Harris, ran Harris-Brennan River Expeditions in the 1950s and 1960s. Besides his interest in river running, Ross was also an avid skier, and was the owner and manager of the Gelande Inn, a ski shop and cafeteria at Snow Basin Ski Resort. Ross died of leukemia on 20 October 1973.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Aaron Belnap Ross Collection consists of 35mm color transparencies taken by Dr. Ross, mainly during his river trips on the Green, Colorado, and other rivers of the western United States. As donated, each river trip was in a separate slide holder, and this original order was maintained with one exception, the folder taking the place of the slide holder. Thus, some folders may contain over 100 slides, while others contain as few as three. It is not known what happened to the other slides in cases where only a few document a particular river trip.

IDENTIFICATIONS: In some cases, individual slides were identified, while others are unlabeled. If present, this identification will be included in the register; if they are of a known location but not identified, the identification will be in brackets [ ___ ]. Where dates are given on the slides, they are reproduced in the register the way they were written on the slide. In some cases, the slides were arranged through their obvious context, and some were either not identifiable, or not dated, or were out of their context and thus could not be readily placed in the proper order. These are found in a Miscellaneous folder at the end of the collection. In some cases, there were no identifications on the slides, nor is there any easily identifiable location or name, so the images in the folders where this is the case are not identified by item. For some folders only those images which are readily identifiable are given a description; all others in that folder are therefore unidentified scenery or persons. Some of the slides came with identifications on the box in which they were filed, but in some cases these are inaccurate or illegible. These box labels have been used whenever possible, but this was not always the case.e Aaron Belnap Ross Collection consists of 35mm color transparencies taken by Dr. Ross, mainly during his river trips on the Green, Colorado, and other rivers of the western United States.
