Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Frances Graves was born Oct. 17, 1913 in Missoula, Montana. Her parents moved to a ranch at Victor, Montana, when she was 3; she was isolated as an only child for 8 years. She attended high school in Hamilton, Montana and then attended the University of Montana in Missoula. Shortly before she would have graduated, she took a job in Helena. Much later she got a degree from George Washington University. She met her future husband, Wilson S. Graves while working at the hospital in Walla Walla, Washington. They married in 1936 and had 2 sons, Daniel and Richard. Her husband died in Snohomish in 1993.
Graves had lifelong concerns for the suffering of people and animals. She worked for civil rights, peace, and animal welfare. In her later life she focused her crusading on the right-to-die movement, belonging to many groups. She also helped to found the Washington chapter of the Hemlock Society and served on its Board of directors. Her mother's suffering before her death in 1960 affected her greatly. She and her husband worked actively on the Initiative 119 campaign in Washington state in 1991. She was also an active member of the ACLU, Greenpeace, PAWs, and Amnesty International. Her support for causes has been mainly through letters to newspapers, magazines, and public officials. Frances died in Snohomish, Washington on June 23, 2003.
